New York City Mayor Eric Adams continued his challenge to gender-inclusive bathroom policies in a television interview on the 22nd, stating his opposition to underage boys and girls sharing the same restroom. He also took the opportunity to slam the “extreme left” within the Democratic Party for hijacking the party.

Adams, along with First Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro, appeared on a PIX News program that day. Discussing bathroom policies, Adams said he believed allowing men and women to use the same restroom or shower was wrong, not only making women feel insecure but also confusing for underage children.

According to the New York City Department of Education’s gender inclusion policy, public schools must provide students with restrooms, locker rooms, or bathrooms that align with their stated gender identity. Schools may not assume a student’s gender. Schools may provide single-sex restrooms, but must also provide alternatives for sexual minorities or students who require greater privacy. State law requires that restrooms designated for single occupancy be marked as “gender neutral.”

Adams stated that, as mayor, he lacks the legal authority to change these policies, but if he were granted that authority, he would definitely do so. “This is not only about protecting students physically, but also morally.” He then used this topic to criticize the current Democratic Party’s pursuit of progressive policies, saying they are being hijacked by the “extreme left” and “deviating from the Democratic Party’s mainstream values.”

The host mentioned that the Trump administration plans to introduce a policy this week aimed at restricting gender-inclusive restrooms. Adams explained that his comments were not meant to appease Trump, but rather to “echo my mother’s” arguments. According to previous reports from this newspaper, Adams publicly called on the city government to review its gender-inclusive school restroom policy last week, but mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani criticized it as “deviating from New York values.”

Currently, Adams ranks last in the polls among all candidates running for mayor, but he announced on the 22nd that he would continue to run. His upcoming Democratic opponent, Mamdani, is a progressive, precisely the “extreme left” that Adams has criticized. According to the latest poll rankings, Mandani leads the other three candidates, including Adams, by a large margin.
