A woman surnamed Xie in Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, failed to use special garbage bags as required in May last year, and illegally dumped garbage in the park, and was stopped and banned by the cleaning team. Unexpectedly, in order to avoid punishment, she bribed the inspector with 1,000 yuan, but the inspector refused on the spot and handed the bribe to the Political Affairs Office, and the case was transferred to the court. After the investigation, the Taipei District Prosecutor’s Office prosecuted the woman surnamed Xie for corruption and bribery.
The incident occurred in the early morning of May 30, 2024. The 64-year-old woman surnamed Xie did not use special garbage bags as required, and even directly dumped household waste on a bulletin board in a park in Zhongzheng District. She was stopped and banned by the inspector surnamed Liu from the district’s cleaning team.
The indictment states that in order to avoid being fined, Mrs. Xie took out 1,000 yuan from her purse on Qidong Street, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City between 2:32 and 2:35 a.m. and put it on the report book of the inspector surnamed Liu as a bribe in exchange for not being fined.
However, the inspector refused on the spot and reported that Mrs. Xie did not dispose of household waste in accordance with regulations. The 1,000 yuan was handed over to the Political Affairs Office of the Environmental Protection Bureau, and the case was transferred to the judicial office by the Independent Commission Against Corruption. After the investigation, the Taipei District Prosecutor’s Office prosecuted the crime of soliciting bribes from civil servants in violation of their duties in accordance with the Anti-Corruption Act.
In addition, Mrs. Xie did not use special garbage bags to dispose of waste in accordance with regulations, and could be fined between 1,200 yuan and 6,000 yuan in accordance with the Waste Disposal Act.
