
After an in-depth investigation, officers from the Special Duty Team of the Tai Po Police District raided a unit on San Fat Street in Sheung Shui at 2pm today (14th), smashed a suspected illegal gambling den, and seized 5 fishing machines, a card reader and 1,160 yuan in cash.
During the operation, officers arrested a man surnamed Chen (32 years old) on suspicion of “operating a gambling venue”; in addition, 1 man, 2 women and 1 mainland man holding a two-way permit (aged 18 to 44) in the unit were arrested on suspicion of “gambling in a gambling venue”. All the arrested persons are currently being detained for investigation.
During the operation, the police arrested a total of 5 people and seized fishing machines, card readers and 1,160 in cash.
According to the Gambling Ordinance, Chapter 148 of the Laws of Hong Kong, “operating a gambling venue” and “gambling in a gambling venue” are serious crimes. Once convicted, the former may be fined up to 5 million yuan and imprisoned for 7 years, and the latter may be fined up to 30,000 yuan and imprisoned for 9 months.
