Recently, some netizens posted on social networking sites that many students in Hangzhou Wenhai Second Experimental School had abnormal physical conditions such as nosebleeds, and parents speculated that it was related to the emissions from a factory next to the school building. On July 14, staff from the Qiantang District Education Bureau and other departments responded to Jimu News reporters that a special working group has been set up to investigate the matter and conduct a comprehensive test of the emissions of the companies involved.
On July 13, several netizens told Jimu News reporters that after the school moved into the new school building around September 2024, many students had nosebleeds. One of the parents said that many students had nosebleeds, rhinitis, repeated foreign body sensation in the throat and dry coughs in the past year. Parents found that these symptoms worsened significantly after moving to the new campus, “children often smell pungent odors on the playground” and “dizziness after exercise worsens.” They speculated that this was related to the emissions from a factory just across the wall from the school.
On July 14, staff from the Qiantang District Education Bureau of Hangzhou responded to a reporter from Jimu News that the bureau had received several petitions regarding the situation at Wenhai Second Experimental School. The district education bureau attached great importance to it and has set up a special working group. The investigation is still ongoing. They are also verifying the actual situation of the students’ physical condition reported by parents and their corresponding demands. In addition to the education bureau, local environmental protection, street offices and other departments have also intervened. Staff from relevant departments in the local area are conducting round-the-clock monitoring at the enterprise.
Staff from relevant departments of the Qiantang Branch of the Hangzhou Ecological Environment Bureau also responded to reporters that the bureau is conducting on-site investigations and has invited professionals to conduct comprehensive testing of the emissions of the companies involved.
