Tough immigration crackdown: Some Republicans and Trump voters: This is not what we voted for

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on the 20th that the Trump administration’s aggressive promotion of deportation policies is testing the tolerance of the American people for political boundaries. Some Republicans and voters who voted for Trump are now expressing different opinions. Republican congressmen from California, Texas, and Florida have publicly called on the White House’s sweeps to prioritize criminals, not undocumented immigrants who have lived in the United States for many years but have not committed crimes. Glenn “GT” Thompson, chairman of the House Agriculture Committee and Republican congressman from Pennsylvania, said that targeting farms for immigration sweeps is “just wrong.”

Ileana Garcia, co-founder of Latinas for Trump and Florida State Senator, wrote on social media X that the Trump administration’s actions are “unacceptable and inhumane” and “we didn’t vote for this.”

Ryan Garcia, a former lightweight boxing champion who endorsed Trump in the 2024 election, also posted on the X platform: “I did vote for Trump, but I cannot remain silent about what the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) did in Los Angeles.” Garcia pointed out: “We can have border security without losing humanity.”

The report pointed out that immigration and deportation have always been Trump’s most popular policy highlights among voters, but recent polls show that dissatisfaction has exceeded satisfaction.

Quinnipiac University released the latest poll earlier this month, showing that 43% of respondents were satisfied with Trump’s immigration policy, 54% were dissatisfied, and 40% were satisfied with Trump’s deportation policy, while 56% were dissatisfied.

Senior polling expert Nate Silver compiled polling data and found that until earlier this month, Trump’s immigration policy had always been more satisfied than dissatisfied, but now dissatisfaction is 3% higher than satisfaction on average.

Fox News polls show that 53% of voters disapprove of Trump’s handling of immigration issues. Trump posted on social media on the 19th: “They keep making mistakes and have a negative attitude, which is why the MAGA camp hates Fox News.”

Democratic polling expert Molly Murphy pointed out that people like to strengthen the border and crack down on illegal immigrants, but feel that the Trump administration is inconsistent and unfair. She said that the survey showed that 40% of Americans oppose the deportation of immigrants without due process or in violation of court orders, and do not approve of immigration raids in churches, schools and schools.

Experts pointed out that Trump has repeatedly emphasized that he will deport millions of undocumented immigrants after taking office. The problem is that if he wants to achieve his goal, he must deport undocumented immigrants who have been illegally residing in the United States for many years but have not committed crimes, not just criminals or undocumented immigrants who are immediately arrested for sneaking into the country.

“We are seeing an increase in immigration enforcement at home at a level we haven’t seen since the Great Depression,” said Alex Nowrasteh, deputy director of economic and social policy studies at the Cato Institute, a think tank.
