A 19-year-old female technical student in Thailand died in her dormitory after drinking 1.5 liters of “kratom leaf juice”.
The Thaiger reported that a 19-year-old female technical student in Udon Thani, Thailand, was found dead in her dormitory room yesterday morning (5th). According to a friend, the deceased had drunk 1.5 liters of kratom juice alone before going to bed.
The Udon Thani police said that they received a report at 10 am yesterday and rushed to the dormitory in Khlong Charoen. The identity of the deceased was only revealed as Kanlaya, a second-year student at a technical college. She was found lying on her back on the bed on the second floor of the dormitory.
Preliminary examination found bruises on both hands, but no signs of fighting or external force. The doctor judged that the time of death was about 1 to 2 hours before the discovery, but the exact cause of death still needs further autopsy confirmation.
Ganlaya’s 19-year-old roommate said that they went to visit a friend’s house the day before yesterday (4th). While the friend and roommate were drinking beer, Ganlaya drank a whole bottle of Kratom juice alone. She did not return to the dormitory until around 5 am the next day.
The roommate recalled that Ganlaya had an abnormal reaction shortly after lying down, with her eyes rolled up and her teeth clenched, seemingly unconscious.
They tried to wake Ganlaya up, but there was no response at all. In a hurry, they immediately asked another friend for help, but in the end they still failed to save her.
Ganlaya had the habit of drinking Kratom juice, but had stopped using it for a while. It is not clear whether she has underlying diseases.
It is said that the bottle of Kratom juice was purchased online. The police are continuing to investigate the source and ingredients of the bottle of Kratom juice, and the exact cause of death still needs to wait for the detailed autopsy results of Udon Thani Hospital.
Kratom is traditionally used as a painkiller in Southeast Asia, and its recreational use in Thailand has been quite common in recent years.
In 2021, Thailand removed Kratom from the national drug list. Kratom has analgesic effects similar to opium, but it also has serious safety concerns. If taken in excess, it may cause nausea, irritability, hallucinations, breathing difficulties, liver damage, and even death.
