Recently, the “3.16 Major Counterfeit Currency Case” cracked by the Gaoping District Branch of the Nanchong Public Security Bureau in Sichuan Province has sparked heated discussions. According to the police, in March 2024, the Gaoping District Branch of the Nanchong Public Security Bureau received an anonymous report that someone would conduct a counterfeit currency transaction in Nanchong in the near future. The public security police immediately verified the clues and arrested five suspects, including Guo and Yu, at the counterfeit currency transaction site on March 16. Through in-depth investigation and expansion of the line, two major counterfeit currency manufacturing gangs, Guo and Feng, were identified, and the “3.16 Major Counterfeit Currency Case” was established on the same day for investigation.

The main suspect in the case used the “movie plot” as inspiration for the crime and used the ghost money printing factory to cover up the transnational counterfeit currency manufacturing. After investigation, it was found that in 2019, Guo was sentenced for illegal possession of firearms and counterfeit foreign currency. After being released from prison, he dreamed of making a fortune by making counterfeit foreign currency. At the end of 2021, Guo invited Yu and others to use the ghost money printing factory as a cover to make counterfeit foreign currency, but stopped after many failed attempts.

At the beginning of 2023, Guo and Yu tried every means to make high-definition templates, buy advanced equipment, and print about 3.6 million counterfeit foreign currencies. At the end of 2023, Guo and Yu met Feng Long, who made counterfeit RMB, while selling counterfeit foreign currencies. Guo proposed to Feng Long that the counterfeit RMB sales be handed over to Guo and Yu’s gang, and the illegal profits be divided into 30% and 70%. He also sold counterfeit foreign currencies and counterfeit RMB in the vicinity of Nanchong many times under the cover of driving online car-hailing. He was subsequently arrested by the local police in Nanchong.

The case has seized more than 1.5 million counterfeit foreign currencies and more than 400,000 counterfeit RMB, arrested 21 criminal suspects, destroyed 6 counterfeit currency manufacturing dens, confiscated 3 sets of counterfeiting equipment, and destroyed a criminal network involving 21 suspects in 11 provinces including Sichuan, Shandong, Guangxi, Fujian, etc., which integrates raw material supply, counterfeiting, distribution, and use. The case has been transferred for prosecution.
