Asghar Jahangir, spokesman for Iran’s judiciary, said on Sunday (June 29) that Israel’s attack on Evin Prison in Tehran, the capital of Iran, on June 23 killed 71 people.

At the end of the air war with Iran, Israel hit Tehran’s most notorious political prison, showing that its targets have expanded from military and nuclear facilities to symbols of Iran’s ruling system, according to Reuters.

Jahangir said on Mizan, the news website of the Iranian judiciary: “A total of 71 people were killed in the attack on Evin Prison, including administrative staff, young people serving in the military, detainees, visiting family members and neighbors living near the prison.”

Jahangir had previously said that part of the prison’s administrative building was damaged in the attack and there were casualties. The Iranian judiciary added that the remaining detainees had been transferred to other prisons in Tehran province.

Evin prison holds several foreign nationals, including two French citizens who have been detained for three years.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said on social media X after the attack: “The attack on Evin prison in Tehran puts our citizens Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris in danger. This is unacceptable.”
