The Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of the exiled Tibet, attended a prayer meeting for his 90th birthday on the 30th. The Dalai Lama said in Tibetan that day, “There will be some kind of framework for the Dalai Lama system, and we can discuss its continuation within the framework.” AFP reported that this was his strongest hint so far that the 600-year-old Dalai Lama system will continue after his death.

The current 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, will turn 90 on July 6. He said that despite his advanced age, “I am in very good health,” and that “in the remaining time of my life, I will continue to dedicate myself to benefit others as much as possible.”

The Dalai Lama, wearing traditional maroon and yellow robes, sat down to listen to the chants and speeches of monks, pilgrims and well-wishers from all over the world, and also tasted a Tibetan-style birthday cake.

After the armed conflict broke out in Tibet in 1959, the Dalai Lama and many Tibetans have been in exile in India ever since. He has won the Nobel Peace Prize. Agence France-Presse said that the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday is not only a personal milestone, but he is also expected to announce whether there will be another Dalai Lama after his death.

The Dalai Lama has said that the system will only continue as long as the people need it. The outside world believes that he will announce his decision on July 2.
