Lawmaker proposes deporting undocumented immigrants’ newborn babies

After the Supreme Court ruled on the 27th to limit the authority of federal courts, the executive order signed by President Trump after taking office to abolish birthright citizenship is expected to take effect in some states soon. Republican Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin said in an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press” program on the 29th that when illegal immigrants are deported, their babies born in the United States should also be deported.
Host Kristen Welker asked Mullin that according to current US law, babies born in the United States automatically obtain US citizenship. If undocumented immigrant parents are deported, what should be done with US citizen babies born in the United States.
Mullin replied that the children of undocumented immigrants should be with their parents. He said: “Why shouldn’t the children be with their parents? I mean, why would you want to separate flesh and blood?”
Whether Trump’s executive order is unconstitutional was not discussed in the Supreme Court’s ruling. Regardless of the immigration status of their parents, children born in the United States have automatically obtained US citizenship for many years. After Trump’s executive order takes effect, it will subvert the historical tradition of the United States.
The Supreme Court’s ruling on Thursday left immigrant communities and advocates confused as they scrambled to clarify whether the executive order revoking birthright citizenship applied only to babies born in certain states.
