Xi Jinping purges senior military officials; Chinese National People’s Congress removes Miao Hua from Central Military Commission

In recent years, many Chinese PLA military generals have been purged and dismissed. Miao Hua, a member of the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China, was officially suspended for investigation at the end of last year. Xinhua News Agency reported today (6/27) that the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress had voted to remove Miao Hua from his position as a member of the Central Military Commission this morning.
Xinhua News Agency reported that the 16th meeting of the 14th National People’s Congress Standing Committee closed this morning at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The meeting voted to pass various decisions, including the removal of Miao Hua from his position as a member of the Central Military Commission.
The Chinese Ministry of Defense announced at the end of November last year that Miao Hua was suspended for investigation for suspected serious violations of discipline. On April 30 this year, the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China issued a notice to revoke Miao Hua’s position as a NPC deputy, but did not remove his title of the Central Military Commission at that time.
Miao Hua is a figure who was strongly cultivated during the tenure of Chinese President Xi Jinping. Born in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, he is regarded as an important figure in Xi Jinping’s “Minjiang New Army”. He was awarded the rank of admiral by Xi Jinping in 2015, and in 2017, he took over from Zhang Yang, who committed suicide out of fear of punishment, as director of the Political Work Department of the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China, and was immediately promoted to the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China.
After the news of Miao Hua’s investigation broke out at the end of last year, CNN pointed out that Miao Hua’s fall showed that Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption campaign in the military has expanded from the earlier targeting of weapons and equipment procurement and Rocket Force officials to the field of political work.
