In a live interview with CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on the morning of the 5th, US President Trump reiterated that it was not he who sought a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, but rather Xi Jinping who wanted to meet with him. Trump dismissed media reports that he sought a meeting with Xi as fake news.
When asked when the Trump-Xi meeting might take place, Trump said that if the US and China reach an agreement, he could meet with Xi before the end of the year.
Trump also stated that India’s high tariffs are a sticking point in the trade dispute between the US and India, and said he might significantly increase tariffs on Indian imports in the next 24 hours. He also said that falling energy prices would pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine, saying, “If energy prices drop low enough, Putin will stop killing people.”
Trump announced at the end of July that he would impose a 25% tariff on Indian goods, in addition to other punitive measures for India’s purchase of Russian oil and other issues.
Trump also said on the 5th that if the EU does not invest $600 billion in the United States as previously announced, EU goods will face a 35% tariff.
