Recently, two serious accidents involving Chinese international students occurred in New York State and New York City, one claiming two young lives and the other causing serious injuries. This has sparked widespread public concern about the personal safety and mental health of international students.
On July 10, a serious traffic accident occurred in Syracuse, New York. Two Chinese international students attending Syracuse University were struck by a large dump truck while walking near campus, resulting in both deaths. Police identified the deceased as 24-year-old Aoyo Cui and 23-year-old Wanshan Li, both from China, pursuing master’s degrees in the College of Engineering and Computer Science.
The accident occurred near East Adams Street and University Avenue. According to police, Wanshan Li was pronounced dead at the scene, while Aoyo Cui died from her injuries after being taken to Upstate University Hospital.
The incident shocked the university and the Chinese community. Syracuse University stated that it is providing support and comfort to the families of the victims and Chinese students on campus. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, and police have not yet released any further information about the driver.
Just 10 days later, at approximately 5 p.m. on July 21st, at the Jackson Heights subway station in Queens, New York City, a 23-year-old Chinese female student accidentally fell from the platform onto the tracks at Broadway and 74th Street on the 7 subway line. She was struck by an incoming train and is in critical condition. Police stated that the initial investigation into the case does not indicate criminal activity, but further investigation is ongoing.
She was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital for emergency treatment. According to the latest news, she underwent a fourth surgery on August 1st, and doctors are currently working to save her left leg.
The injured person, a student at Cornell Tech (Cornell University’s applied research and graduate school campus in New York City), was expected to graduate with a master’s degree in August and was preparing to embark on a new phase of his life when he suffered an unfortunate accident.
In New York City and other university towns, traffic accidents frequently occur near university campuses. Subway platforms, intersections, and areas with frequent large vehicle traffic all pose potential threats to students. Many Chinese parents and community members have called on relevant departments to strengthen traffic regulations, enhance safety education for international students, and improve psychological support services at universities.
