South Korea’s Seoul Central District Court issued an arrest warrant for former President Yoon Seok-yeol in the early hours of the 10th. Yoon Seok-yeol was detained in Seoul Detention Center again after four months. Yonhap News Agency reported that Yoon Seok-yeol’s defense lawyer Kim Gyu-ri posted on Facebook that Seoul Detention Center did not give Yoon Seok-yeol time for outdoor exercise, which constituted a violation of human rights. The South Korean Ministry of Justice issued a statement on the 13th, refuting Kim Gyu-ri’s statement that it was untrue and said that detainees had one hour of outdoor exercise time every day.
The Ministry of Justice stated that the relevant legal provisions on education and reform showed that the detention center treated Yoon Seok-yeol the same as other detainees, but in order to prevent Yoon Seok-yeol from having unnecessary contact with other people, the detention center gave him special management on individual issues.
The Ministry of Justice pointed out that detainees can have one hour of outdoor sports activities every day, and Yoon Seok-yeol’s outdoor activity time and frequency are the same as others. However, the detention center arranged for Yoon Seok-yeol to exercise outdoors alone to prevent him from contacting other people. Unless there are arrangements for defense counsel to visit, appear in court, etc., outdoor activities should be carried out normally as required at other times.
