The implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law is approaching its fifth anniversary. The Hong Kong democratic party, the Social Democratic Alliance (SDA), which was established 19 years ago, held a press conference today and announced its dissolution.
Chairman Chan Po-ying said that in the face of strong political pressure, she had considered various factors, “especially the impact on members and fellow travelers. We can only announce the dissolution with great sadness.”
When asked about the specific reasons and time for the dissolution, Chan Po-ying said she could not explain further and repeatedly reiterated that the dissolution was a helpless decision and “the only choice when there is no other way.”
In recent years, many political parties in Hong Kong have been dissolved one after another. Some political scholars described that the authorities will officially achieve the goal of political cleansing; some pro-establishment legislators also believed that the dissolution was a decision made by the party itself.
