On June 17, a customer said that when he checked into the Chongwenmen branch of Orange Crystal Hotel in Dongcheng District, Beijing, he found a suspected HIV test kit in his toiletries bag, which attracted attention online.
On June 19, the person involved, Mr. Xu, said that on the 16th, he and his girlfriend and family traveled from Shandong to Beijing and booked a room at the Chongwenmen Orange Crystal Hotel in Beijing for two nights. On the evening of the 17th, he got the toothbrush and toiletries bag provided by the cleaning staff, and only found an HIV test kit in the toiletries bag after brushing his teeth.
A hotel staff member told Red Star News that the hotel had accompanied the customer to the hospital and paid the relevant fees that day, but the amount of compensation requested by the customer was much higher than 3,000 yuan, which the hotel could not accept, so it asked for legal procedures.
According to Mr. Xu’s recollection, at about 6 pm on the 17th, they asked the cleaner for a toothpaste in the corridor. The cleaner said there was a toothbrush and asked if he wanted it. He said yes, and the cleaner gave them the toothbrush and toiletries bag. “At first we didn’t notice the HIV test kit in the toiletries bag, and we used the toothbrush and toothpaste normally. Later, when I took a shower and water got into my ears, I wanted to use a cotton swab to clean my ears, and I saw this thing. Mr. Xu said that a normal toiletries bag is sealed with a sticker, “the toiletries bag given to us by the cleaner is open.” According to media reports, Mr. Xu said that the test kit “HIV1/2” had a faint positive line.
Mr. Xu said that afterwards, the hotel took them to the hospital that night and paid the medical expenses, and proposed to pay for the subsequent examination and treatment costs for two people, a total of 3,000 yuan, “saying that any problems in the future will have nothing to do with their hotel.” But Mr. Xu did not agree with this plan. Mr. Xu said that they will need to take blocking drugs for 1 month in the later stage, and they will have to undergo reexamination. The doctor said that it will take 3 to 6 months to detect whether they are infected. “Our request is not to ask the hotel to compensate us, but if we are infected with HIV, they need to bear the follow-up treatment. If there is no infection, there will be no disputes between the two of us. ”
Regarding Mr. Xu’s claim that the test kit “HIV1/2” has a faint positive line. Li Dongzeng, chief physician of the infectious department of Beijing You’an Hospital, told Red Star News that from the picture, he thought it was not obvious and presumed to be negative. He pointed out that if you share a toothbrush with an infected person, there is a risk of infection in theory, but it generally requires sharing for a short period of time. Even so, the average probability of infection is less than one in ten thousand, and no such infection cases have been seen so far.
Li Dongzeng reminded that in order to prevent infection, it is recommended to use your own toiletries, or make sure that they are disposable and unused before use, but there is no need to worry about contracting sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS when sharing toilets and bathtubs.
At noon on June 19, a Red Star News reporter came to the Beijing Chongwenmen branch of Orange Crystal Hotel. The front desk staff told Red Star News that the health department and the public security department have intervened in the investigation and evidence collection, and it is not yet clear what the situation is. At this time, law enforcement officers from the health supervision department happened to come for routine health inspections.
The staff explained, When the toiletries bag was given to the guest, the (cleaning) lady opened it and saw that there was nothing else inside. “There was indeed nothing when we gave it to him, but the guest said there was.” The hotel has surveillance, which can prove that the lady did look at it. The surveillance has been handed over to the public security organs, and the test kit has been taken for testing. I believe that the public security organs have a way to confirm where the test kit came from.
He also said that the hotel had accompanied the customer to the hospital and paid the relevant fees that day, but the amount of compensation requested by the customer was much higher than 3,000 yuan, which the hotel could not accept, so it asked for legal procedures.
However, the hotel’s statement is not exactly the same as Mr. Xu’s. Mr. Xu denied that he asked the hotel for compensation. In addition, regarding the hotel’s statement that the cleaner said “there was no test kit in the bag”, Mr. Xu said, “This thing is recorded by both parties, and it has been explained to the police completely. They are now (saying this) to protect their reputation, so it is meaningless. ”
