Identity stolen for 26 years! Poor man “owes $3 million in debt” and is sued, the culprit only served 4 months in jail and paid $40,000

Dang Wenjie, a man from Baishui County, Weinan, Shaanxi Province, was admitted to a technical secondary school in 1999. He was impersonated by Wang Xinli, a man from a neighboring county, and enrolled in a technical secondary school. In the more than 20 years since then, Wang Xinli used Dang Wenjie’s identity to work, take out loans, register companies, and even participate in lawsuits. The identity theft brought Dang Wenjie endless troubles. Not only was his medical insurance unable to be used normally, and his household registration transfer was blocked, but he also had a debt of RMB 800,000 (about NT$3.24 million).
According to reports from mainland media, Dang Wenjie applied for a normal school in Shaanxi in 1999 and was admitted, but was impersonated by someone else. However, he had no idea and could only repeat the exam and enter a middle school in Baishui County. In 2019, Dang Wenjie, who had already graduated, went to the bank to apply for credit materials for work. Only then did he find out that he had never been to Chengdu, but he had 8 credit cards in Chengdu, Sichuan, and more than 800,000 yuan had not been repaid.
Dang Wenjie, 42, suffers from ankylosing spondylitis. He cannot bend or turn his head, and cannot go to the hospital for surgery because the medical insurance card has someone else’s head portrait and he cannot pass the facial recognition. Despite this, he insisted on not changing the card, saying only “This is one of the few evidences I have.” Over the years, Dang Wenjie has been sued by the bank, restricted from high consumption, and unable to take high-speed trains and planes. However, he has been on the road of rights protection for more than 10 years, but he has never been able to find the culprit behind it.
The man who pretended to be Dang Wenjie is called Wang Xinli. He used the other party’s identity to swindle and commit numerous crimes. What is even more speechless is that Wang has 4 sets of legal identities, and Dang Wenjie is just one of them. Once something goes wrong, he can switch identities at any time and continue to be at large. Dang’s father recently revealed that if it were not for another victim Li Jun to bring the news, they would not know that Wang had been sentenced to 4 months in prison and fined 10,000 yuan (about NT$40,000) by the court in March this year, and was released on May 11 this year.
As a victim of identity theft, Dang Wenjie’s family has not received any information about Wang’s verdict, but the case has been concluded. Dang Wenjie said helplessly, “He spent 4 months and 10,000 yuan to exchange for my 26 years of life. To this day, I have not received an apology.” He emphasized that the remaining problems caused by the misuse of his identity information have not been completely resolved, and he will continue to walk the path of rights protection.
